In an exciting turn of events, Fable, a San Francisco-based company, has launched Showrunner, an AI-powered platform that lets users create their own TV shows by writing simple prompts. This innovative platform, hailed as the “Netflix of AI,” is revolutionizing how we create and consume entertainment.
From Emmy Awards to AI TV Shows
Two Primetime Emmys have already been won by Fable, which is run by CEO Edward Saatchi and staffed by veterans from Pixar, Oculus, and other AI startups. Originally focused on virtual reality, the company is now diving headfirst into the AI wave with Showrunner. This platform allows users to create TV shows and episodes from the comfort of their couch simply by describing the episode they want to watch. Within minutes, they can start enjoying their custom-made content.
“The next Netflix won’t be purely passive,” Saatchi explained. “You will be at home; describe the show you’d like to watch, and within a minute or two, start watching.”
How Showrunner Works
Showrunner is designed to be user-friendly, targeting non-technical users who want to be entertained. Users can create animated episodes by providing a prompt of around 10 to 15 words. These prompts can generate episodes ranging from 2 to 16 minutes, complete with AI dialogue, voice acting, editing, and consistent character development.
“One prompt with 15 words can be enough for AI to generate a whole episode of 10 to 20 minutes,” Saatchi said, noting that many users prefer to provide a prompt for each scene.

AI in Entertainment
Fable has announced ten TV shows made with Showrunner, including the first AI TV show, Exit Valley, a harsh satire of Silicon Valley. Showrunner demonstrated its capabilities last year with nine AI-generated episodes of South Park, which received millions of views and sparked interest from major networks like Fox and Netflix.
However, Saatchi acknowledges that AI currently excels at creating episodic content rather than epic multi-episode arcs seen in shows like Breaking Bad or Game of Thrones. “Today, AI can’t sustain a story beyond one episode,” he admitted. But Fable is working on building simulations that allow characters to have longer story arcs with lasting consequences.
A New Era of Interactive Entertainment
Showrunner is not just for casual users; entertainment professionals can also dive deeper into the creative process, editing scripts, shots, and voices. Saatchi hopes that user-generated content will gain audiences via self-publishing on platforms like Amazon Prime, with the potential for revenue sharing and IMDB credits for standout contributions.
This AI-driven approach represents a significant shift in the entertainment industry. Philipp Maas, co-creator of Showrunner, stated, “Showrunner is about letting people who have amazing ideas for shows and episodes get in the door of Hollywood—we’re excited to see what people make.”
The Future of AI and Entertainment
Fable’s vision extends beyond just episodic content. Saatchi envisions a future where AI characters in the simulation of “Sim Francisco” live their lives, creating a dynamic, interactive world for users to explore. This experimental approach could lead to the development of general artificial intelligence, pushing the boundaries of what AI can achieve in entertainment.
Saatchi concluded, “Our relationship to entertainment will be totally different in five years, and we’re excited for Showrunner to be part of that change.”
With Showrunner, Fable is setting the stage for a new era of interactive, AI-generated content, making Hollywood’s creative process more accessible and dynamic than ever before.
